AscendID secures Bristol City Council ICT

Bristol City Council ICT Supplier Newsletter featured AscendID in its August 2017 issue to highlight the importance of two-factor and multi-factor authentication for local government.

What service does AscendID provide to Bristol City Council?
As an integral part of BCC’s secure access strategy, AscendID designed and implemented a tailored 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) solution to replace static passwords previously required when logging in to corporate networks and resources. This was later enhanced to complement the BCC Agile Working initiative.

How has AscendID been working in partnership to deliver maximum value to Bristol CC?
We have a long and successful history of working with public sector clients throughout the UK. That helped us to proactively advise BCC so that we could pre-empt commercial, technical and user-related challenges. This led to a tailored solution design that exceeded the remit expectations, and delivered a solution which enabled BCC to significantly reduce the total cost of operation.

What changes in the market are you expecting to see in the next 12 months?
We’ve already seen a big shift away from hardware token-based solutions towards mobile/smart phone-based 2 Factor Authentication solutions. This shift will continue due to the increased simplicity for users of options such as “Push” notification technology, device scoring and biometrics. Push allows users to simply “accept” a notification with “1 click” to then seamlessly securely login to corporate systems and applications without the need to type in a password and or 2FA code and or PIN.

If there was one thing you could improve what would it be?
We’re pioneering a change in licensing from a cost per user per year to a “pay as you use/consume” model. Customers often need to provide full security to an entire work force, partner and contractor base who may only need to securely access on an ad hoc or occasional basis. The market isn’t offering this on an affordable basis at the moment, and I aim to lead the way to achieve that goal in 2018 and beyond.

What’s the one thing we don’t know about Lee Harrison, Director, AscendID?
I’m a security industry veteran who has been involved in the secure access space for over 20 years.
